Basic Information
Definition
An air shock absorber is a type of suspension component that combines the functions of a traditional shock absorber and an air spring. It uses compressed air to provide both damping and load-leveling capabilities.
Working Principle
• Height Adjustment:The height control valve in the system senses changes in vehicle height. When the vehicle body lowers, the valve opens to allow air into the air spring, causing it to expand and raise the vehicle height back to the set level.Conversely, when the vehicle body rises, the valve opens to release air from the air spring, lowering the vehicle.
• Variable Stiffness:When the vehicle is unloaded and at rest, the air spring is inflated to a certain pressure, providing basic support. As the vehicle is loaded with passengers or cargo, the increased weight compresses the air spring, raising the air pressure inside and generating a counteracting force to support the additional load.
• Shock Absorption:When the vehicle encounters bumps, the air spring is compressed. The compressibility of air absorbs part of the vibration energy.Meanwhile, the damping unit, which is usually a hydraulic shock absorber working in parallel with the air spring, generates resistance as its piston moves through the damping fluid, converting kinetic energy into heat and dissipating it.
Advantages
• Adjustable Ride Height:Allows the vehicle to maintain a consistent ride height regardless of load changes, which is particularly useful for vehicles that experience significant weight variations.
• Improved Comfort and Handling:Provides a smooth ride over uneven roads while maintaining good vehicle handling characteristics.
• Reduced Maintenance:Compared to some other types of suspension systems, air shock absorbers can have a longer service life due to the absence of metal springs that can wear out or corrode.
Applications
Air shock absorbers are commonly used in high-end vehicles, luxury cars, and some commercial vehicles where ride comfort and load-leveling capabilities are important. They are also used in specialized applications such as aircraft landing gear, where they provide both shock absorption and load leveling.
Types and Variations
• Integrated Air Spring and Shock Absorber Systems:Some designs, like the ShockWave, combine the air spring and shock absorber into a single unit, allowing for more compact installation and easier adjustment.
• Adjustable Air Pressure:Many air shock absorbers allow for manual or automatic adjustment of air pressure to fine-tune the ride height and stiffness according to different driving conditions or user preferences.
