The drive shaft plays a crucial role in transmitting power from the engine—via the transmission—to the drive wheels, enabling the vehicle to move forward or backward. In four-wheel-drive vehicles, it works in conjunction with the transfer case to distribute power between the front and rear axles, enhancing traction, off-road capability, and overall stability. As the vehicle moves, the relative position between the transmission and the drive axle changes due to suspension movement (such as bouncing or pitching). The drive shaft, equipped with universal joints and a slip yoke, compensates for these positional and angular changes—typically within a range of 3° to 15°—to ensure continuous power delivery. Additionally, some drive shaft designs incorporate elastic components like rubber bushings to absorb vibrations and shocks during torque transfer, thereby improving ride comfort and drivetrain durability.
